Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) for B2B: how to get cited by ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

B2B buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity to shortlist vendors before they ever click a Google link. Here is the exact 4-layer GEO architecture we deploy so AI answer engines cite your business first.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) for B2B is the engineering practice of structuring your website so Large Language Models (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews) can parse, verify, and cite your company as the authoritative vendor. It requires four technical layers: a 40-to-60 word direct-answer lead after every H1, semantic HTML comparison tables, deterministic Service and FAQPage JSON-LD with explicit pricing, and an atomic /llms.txt index generated straight from your codebase.

Think about how a founder or procurement lead researches a vendor today. Two years ago, they typed four words into Google and opened ten browser tabs. Today, they paste a full paragraph into ChatGPT or Perplexity: "Find me a European agency that implements Odoo 19 and custom B2B software for a 30-person hardware distributor, with transparent fixed pricing."

If your website hides its pricing behind "Contact us," buries its facts inside JavaScript carousels, and fills its blog with 2,000-word fluffy intros, the AI crawler skips you completely and recommends your competitor.

Traditional SEO tried to trick an algorithm into clicking your link. GEO gives an AI answer engine the exact verified facts it needs to quote your name.

01Why traditional SEO playbooks fail in ChatGPT and Perplexity

For fifteen years, SEO agencies told B2B companies to write bloated 2,500-word blog posts stuffed with repetitive keywords ("What is ERP? History of ERP...") and keep pricing secret so leads would book a discovery call.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) engines hate that pattern. When Perplexity or ChatGPT Search retrieves a web page, it slices the HTML into token chunks and scores each chunk on information density, entity specificity, and structural clarity. Vague marketing adjectives score near zero; concrete numbers inside a <table> or <script type="application/ld+json"> block score at the top.

02The 4-layer GEO architecture we build into every site

We apply this exact four-layer architecture on our own domain (qann.co/llms.txt) and across the reference platforms and B2B websites we engineer (/services/websites):

1. The 40-Word Direct-Answer Lead

Look at the first paragraph of this article, or any service page on qann.co. Within the first 60 words after the <h1>, we state the exact definition, the target company size, the concrete mechanism, and the starting price in EUR. When Google AI Overviews or Perplexity synthesizes an answer, that opening block is formatted to be lifted verbatim with a citation link.

2. Semantic HTML Tables Instead of Div Soup

LLMs are trained heavily on Markdown and HTML tables because tables bind attributes (Price, Timeline, Scope) to entities (Qann, Legacy Agency) unambiguously. When we built the Medical Cannabis Index (indexing 100+ sovereign legal frameworks and clinical formularies) and the Global Peptide Index (CAS numbers, molecular weights, and HPLC purity benchmarks), we rendered every specification in clean, server-rendered HTML tables rather than client-side JavaScript widgets that crawlers cannot execute.

3. Entity-Rich JSON-LD (Service, TechArticle, FAQPage)

Every service page on a B2B website should carry a machine-readable Service and FAQPage JSON-LD block containing your legal entity name, commercial register number, service offers with priceCurrency and price, and plain-English answers to buyer objections. You can inspect ours live on /ai and /services.

4. Build-Time /llms.txt Parity

An /llms.txt file is a clean Markdown map at the root of your domain that tells AI crawlers who you are, what you do, what you do not do, what your services cost, and where every case study and technical article lives. On qann.co, public/llms.txt is compiled automatically during npm run build from the exact same data files (lib/projects.ts, content/thoughts/*.mdx, lib/site-origin.json) that generate /sitemap.xml, so it never drifts out of sync.

Every website we build under /services/websites (from EUR 999 for static sites and EUR 2,499 for dynamic B2B sites) and every content system we wire under /services/ai ships with full GEO architecture, Service/FAQPage JSON-LD, and automated /llms.txt generation included. Send us your URL and we will show you how ChatGPT and Perplexity currently see your business.
